Rare 1942 Washington Redskins World Championship fob issued to well-known Washington sports announcer Russ Hodges. This is just the third example of this attractive fob we have ever handled and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another offered at auction. The gold-colored fob, designed in the shape of a football, features the team's "Indian Chief" logo in relief on a side panel, with the headdress accented in red enamel. The year, 1942, appears on the same panel. Lettered on the other three panels, respectively, in descending order, are "World's Champion Redskins," the score "Redskins 14 Bears 6," and the name of the recipient, "Russ Hodges."

Russ Hodges was the radio announcer for the Washington Redskins at the time. Hodges went on to greater fame as the voice of the New York/San Francisco Giants and is best remembered today for his legendary call of Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round the World" in 1951. In 1980 he received the distinguished "Ford C. Frick Award" by the Baseball Hall of Fame. 1942 marked the Redskins second NFL Championship and their victory over the Bears avenged a humiliating 73-0 loss to Chicago in the 1940 title game. All NFL Championship presentational pieces from this time period are scarce and highly prized by collectors, especially those given to significant team employees, such as Hodges. The fob, which measures one-inch in length, remains in Excellent to Mint condition
