When Mickey Mantle joined the New York Yankees in 1951, he played right field as Joe DiMaggio stayed in center field for his final season, but Mickey was at his best as a center fielder and he played the position in 1,742 games. Offered is a New York Yankees ticket stub from Sunday, Sept. 18, 1966, at Yankee Stadium, when Mickey Mantle played center field for the final time. When Mickey made the Yankee roster in '51, his terrific speed enabled him to simply outrun almost all of his mistakes in reading fly balls and line drives. However, Mantle, beginning with a knee injury in high school that developed into osteomyelitis, and continuing with a serious knee injury in the 1951 World Series, began to have more and more trouble with his knees and legs as his career advanced. With his knees and legs severely hindering his mobility, Mickey, in his final two seasons of 1967-68 played only at first base.

In Mantle's final game in center field, he made three putouts, a long fly ball from Harmon Killebrew in the top of the 2nd inning, and a fly ball and a line drive from Andy Kosco and Zoilo Versalles, respectively, in the top of the 5th inning. In the top of the 6th inning, Joe Pepitone replaced Mantle in center field. The ticket stub measures approx. 2.5x3". It reads, in part, "SUN. SEP. 18 - 1966/RAIN CHECK/Enter gate 2/Lower Stand Box Seat $3.50/77." It has a New York Yankees logo stamp. The stub has been encapsulated and PSA CERTIFIED as "VG-EX 4."
