Jackie Robinson hit 137 home runs in the Major Leagues, but the Hall of Famer hit only one inside-the-park homer. In playing half of his games at tiny Ebbets Field, it was hard for the speedy Robinson to circle the bases on a hit inside the park because the confines were so close. However, the great expanses of the outfield at the Polo Grounds were another story. Presented is a ticket stub from the July 10, 1948, game at the Polo Grounds between the visiting Brooklyn Dodgers and the home team New York Giants from the first, and the ONLY time Jackie Robinson hit a Major league inside the park home run. Robinson had won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 1947 when he broke the modern Major League "Color Line." He was still going strong on July 10th in the next season, and he had already hit 12 home runs in his rookie year and three already in '48.
Jackie was playing second base and batting second. It was the top of the 7th inning, with the Giants and the Dodgers were tied at 8 runs. Robinson was batting with Pee Wee Reese on first base and Billy Cox on second base and one out. Robinson hit a 1-0 pitch from Andy Hansen to deep right field and was able to circle the bases for a three-run homer, giving the Dodgers a lead they never relinquished in a 15-10 win.
The ticket stub measures 1.6x2.75". It reads, in part, "RAIN CHECK/NEW YORK GIANTS/Baseball Club/Polo Grounds/Game No. 39/Saturday JULY 10 1948/Lower Box Seat $2.50." The stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded "GOOD 2(MK)."
