Presented is the 1985 Kentucky Derby Jockey Trophy that was won by Angel Cordero Jr. aboard Spend a Buck. This was the 111th edition of the Derby, run on May 4th before 108,573 spectators. Cordero is the first Puerto Rican to have won all three Triple Crown races, although he did not win them all in the same year. Cordero is also the first jockey from Puerto Rico to be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. The '85 Derby was the third time Cordero had won at Churchill Downs: He won the Derby in 1974, aboard Cannonade and in 1976, riding Bold Forbes. At 42 years and six months, Cordero became the oldest jockey to have won the Kentucky Derby when he won in '85. Cordero also won the Preakness Stakes in '80 aboard Codex, and the Preakness again in '84 aboard Gate Dancer. Cordero, known for his rough tactics and controversial fouls, rode every race as if it were his last. Cordero won the third Triple Crown jewel, the Belmont Stakes, in 1984, aboard Bold Forbes. Cordero was the leading rider at Saratoga Race Course for 13 seasons. He was the United States Jockey Champion in earnings in 1976, '82, and '83, and the U.S. Champion in wins in 1968. He also was awarded the prestigious Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 1982, '83, and '85. He has 7,057 career wins.
With Cordero riding, Spend a Buck won the '85 Derby with a time of 2:00 1/5, then the fourth fastest time in history. With fast track conditions, Spend a Buck broke quickly from the gate and his expected competition, Eternal Prince, got off to a poor start and never recovered. Spend a Buck's fractions were: 0:23; 45 4/5; 1:09 3/5; 1:34 4/5. Spend a Buck finished 5-1/4 lengths ahead of the second-place finisher, Stephan's Odyssey, ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr. In third place was Chief's Crow, with Don MacBeth aboard. After the Derby, in search of a large bonus, owner Cam Gambolati chose to have Spend a Buck forego both the Preakness and Belmont and instead race at Garden State Racetrack.
The offered silver trophy stands 6.2" tall. The base is 2.75" in diameter, and at the top the diameter is 3.25". The trophy is ornately crafted, and it has a raised image of a horseshoe. Engraved on the cup of the trophy: "KENTUCKY DERBY JOCKEY CLUB/May 4, 1985/CHURCHILL DOWNS/WON BY ANGEL CORDERO JR." Engraved on the underside of the base: "STERLING LEMON & SON LOUISVILLE, KY." The trophy has a very small dent of about a quarter inch diameter at about an inch from the top, some very light scratches, and some light tarnishing. Despite some very minor imperfections, this jockey trophy is a terrific thoroughbred racing remembrance, as it is for Angel Cordero Jr., one of the greatest jockeys of all time, for his victory in the most illustrious race of all - the magnificent Kentucky Derby.
