Presented is a fascinating vintage baseball offering: A 1919 Cincinnati Reds' World Series Official Souvenir Score Card from the infamous "Black Sox" World Series, when eight Chicago White Sox players were later banned for life from Major League baseball from their association with gamblers who fixed the 1919 World Series. The Cincinnati Red Stockings (later just Reds) in 1869 became baseball's first openly professional team. That squad managed a record of 57-0 against other members of the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBL). The cover of the offered score card reads, "GOLDEN JUBILEE/CINCINNATI REDS/Champions 1869 - 1919/Official Souvenir Score Card. WORLD'S SERIES GAMES/REDLAND FIELD 1919/Price 25 Cents." Pictured on the cover is Cincinnati manager Pat Moran. The score card is hobby fresh from the collection of Reds 1919 World Champion first baseman Jake Daubert. The score card comes directly from the family. This score card and other items from the collection are in this sale.
The program has 48 pages (not including covers), and it measures 9x12". The offering has pictures (in tie and jacket) and short bios of all the Cincinnati players. Pages 21-28, as an entity, have come loose from the score card, but remain within the score card. The pages contain the actual score card sections, not scored. The names of the White Sox on the score card include Eddie Collins, an honest player in the Hall of Fame, and two other honest Hall of Famers, pitcher Red Faber, who had influenza and did not play in the World Series, and catcher Ray Schalk. The program also contains the names of the "Eight Men Out," the players banned from baseball for life by Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis for their association with gamblers who fixed the World Series. These players include Shoeless Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Eddie Cicotte, Lefty Williams, and Chick Gandil. Edd Roush, a Hall of Fame center fielder for the Cincinnati Reds, is listed on the score card. The score card is in very good condition with one small tear on bottom edge and a few stains, small folds and crinkling, mainly on the covers. Although termed a score card, the offering is in essence a program that includes a score card, and it is a wonderful, vintage baseball item from an notorious time in baseball's history.
