Pittsburgh Pirates home jersey worn by outfielder Richie Zisk during his 1973 rookie season. The white knit jersey is lettered "Pirates" across the front and features the number "22" on the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in black on gold tackle twill. Located on the interior left rear tail are a "Rawlings 44" label and a flag tag reading "Set #8P 197_" (the flag tag is ripped at the end and does not display the final numeral of the year). Despite that fact, the jersey can be pinpointed to the 1973 season because there is evidence that the special circular memorial patch for Roberto Clemente (which appeared on all Pirates uniforms in 1973) has been removed (the stitch outline of the patch is clearly visible on the left sleeve). Also, Pirates jerseys in 1973 did not have name tags, but Richie Zisk was the only Pirates player to wear number "22" in 1973. In addition to the Clemente memorial patch having been removed, the number on the reverse has been restored. Extensive wear is evident throughout, indicating subsequent minor league use, including fading and slight tears to the letters and numerals, and numerous team repairs to tears on the reverse. The jersey also displays light foxing throughout, which is probably related to its method of storage rather than game use.
1973 marked Zisk's first full season in the Major Leagues. Appearing in 109 games, he batted an impressive .324 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI. One of the game's most dependable sluggers during the 1970s, Zisk retired after the 1983 season with 207 home runs, 792 RBI, and a .287 lifetime average.
