2012 "Horse of the Year" Eclipse Award presented to the owner of Wise Dan. An Eclipse Award is the most prestigious award in the field of horse racing, with twelve different Eclipse Awards presented annually in five different categories to both males and fillies, plus a single award for Steeplechase excellence. The other single-category Eclipse Award is for "Horse of the Year," which is tantamount to the MVP Award in other sports.
The offered 2012 "Horse of the Year" Eclipse Award has been consigned directly by the owner of Wise Dan and has never before been offered for sale, either publicly or privately. The design, which is a work of art as much as a trophy, features a bronze figural horse mounted atop a wooden base. The engraving on the plaque reads "Eclipse Award/2012/Horse Of The Year/Wise Dan/Ch. g. 5 by Wiseman's Ferry - Lisa Danielle/Owned by/Morton Fink." The award, which measures 10.5 inches in height, displays a few minor scratches and blemishes on the plaque, and light tarnishing to figural horse. Base: 7x4.25". Accompanied by a one-page signed letter of provenance from Wise Dan's owner.
Wise Dan was one of the greatest race horses in history and is the first horse to win three identical Eclipse Awards in consecutive years: 2012 and 2013 "Horse of the Year," 2012 and 2013 "Champion Older Male" and 2012 and 2013 "Champion Male Turf Horse." In a career that spanned the years 2010 and 2014, Wise Dan won nineteen graded stakes races, including the Breeders' Cup Mile (2012 and 2013), the Woodbine Mile (2012 and 2013), and the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (2012 and 2014). Following his retirement, Wise Dan was inducted into both the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame (2016) and the United States Horse Racing Hall of Fame (2020).
