Presented is a group of eleven (11) Mickey Mantle Day programs from the Sept. 18, 1965, game at Yankee Stadium honoring the Hall of Fame slugger. Mantle was not particularly old for a baseball player in 1965, as he was still only 33 years of age. Yet his leg injuries over the years had diminished his ability to both run and hit. When he finished his playing career after the 1968 season, Mantle had 536 home runs, still the all-time record for a switch-hitter. The 7-time World Champion was a 3-time AL MVP, but at the end of the '65 season, he had only batted .255, with 19 home runs and 46 RBIs. The Yankees were well out of the pennant race when the Mickey Mantle Day festivities were held on Sept. 18th. Perhaps many fans thought that '65 would be Mickey's final season and that retirement was looming. Yankee Stadium held 51,641 fans on Mickey Mantle Day. Mantle played left field and was 0-for-3 with a walk, and the Bronx Bombers lost by a 4-3 score to the Detroit Tigers.
The offered four-page programs are not the traditional game program sold at a ballpark that lists each team's roster and has a section to score the game. The offered program was an additional added program that was given to the fans for the special Mickey Mantle Day celebration. The Mantle Day programs measure 8.4x11.3". The cover has a small color image of a young Mantle, in uniform and created by James Bama, from Mickey Mantle's The Quality of Courage, by Bantam Books. Inside the program are ten small photos involving Mantle, a Mantle biography and extensive Mantle statistics. The back page of the Mantle program lists the day's schedule and shows that Red Barber, the great announcer, was the Master of Ceremonies. The six programs exhibit some very slight toning near the top and at some edges, and a few tiny "strands" of paper are along the spines - but overall, the programs are in EXCELLENT condition, and they each make for a fine Mantle remembrance.
