Presented is a terrific opportunity to possess an electrifying remembrance from the revolutionary Grateful Dead band, a 1986 "Dead" calendar with signatures of six (6) different band members, plus a second signature of Mickey Hart. Formed in the San Francisco Bay area in 1965 from an earlier band known as the Warlocks, the Grateful Dead lasted for over 40 years, until a few months after the 1995 death of lead guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia, when the remaining members of the band decided to disband. The Dead was unique: Unlike most legendary bands, the group had almost no radio hits and relied on live performances as the main source of income. Unlike most bands, the Grateful Dead had no prepared setlist for a performance. As Jerry Garcia stated, "We didn't want to rely on a list to tell us what to play." Instead, the group relied on instinct, emotions and reading the crowd's reactions to suggest the next song from their approximately 100 prepared numbers. In addition, the Dead allowed fans to tape their performances. As part of the 1960s counterculture movement, the Dead were often a part of beat author Ken Kesey's Acid Tests performances. The band basically invented what became known as psychedelic music. With Jerry Garcia inspired by improvisational style of many jazz and blues musicians such as Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Art Tatum and Duke Ellington, the Dead never seemed to perform the same way twice. The group employed variations of jazz, blues, rock and roll, bluegrass, country and western, and even reggae music. Sometimes Garcia and rhythm guitarist Bob Weir would switch roles, mid-song. Often bass guitarist Phil Lesh would delay the key part of a chord to build anticipation, and the group would sometimes even change the musical key or even scale, right in the midst of a song. The Dead performed 2,318 concerts, with an average time of three hours. Just some of the band's most popular recordings include: "Terrapin Station Medley" (1977), "Ripple" (1970), "Casey Jones" (1970), "Dark Star" (1969), "Truckin' " (1970), "Touch of Grey" (1987), "Uncle John's Band" (1970), "Friend of the Devil" (1970). The offered 9x11" color calendar has 26 pages, including covers. The cover reads, "GRATEFUL DEAD 1986." Each month has a color photo of a band member on the top page and the month's calendar on the page below. In addition to the holidays found on any calendar, this calendar lists the particular dates when many Dead songs were first played.  Each of the seven signatures, including the two separate signatures of drummer/percussionist Mickey Hart, are on separate pages. Each signature is big and bold, signed in blue, red, or black marker. The signatures: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart (x2), Brent Mydland, and Bill Kreutzmann. The Dead improvisational style changed the course of music. Even in 2024, members of the band, singly or as part of a group, still performed, but the death of Phil Lesh put plans for a reunion tour of surviving members of the band in 2025 (the Dead's 60th Anniversary), on hold. The offering comes with a JSA LOA for the signatures, and the calendar is in EXCELLENT condition, and the signatures and signed photos make a stellar remembrance.
