Displayed is a circa 1955 James Dean personalized, signed photograph. Dean is one of the most acclaimed actors in the history of American film. He made only three major motion pictures: East of Eden (1955), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), and Giant (released in 1956), but his fame was already immense when he lost his life in a car crash in 1955. Dean was born in Indiana, and grew up in both Brentwood, California, and later back in Indiana. He studied theater in New York City's famed Actors Studio. Using the method acting that he learned at the Actors Studio, his portrayals of rebellious teenagers in both East of Eden and in Rebel Without a Cause made him the idol of many younger movie fans. The offered 8x10" black & white photo is a Warner Brothers publicity still for Rebel Without a Cause, directed by Nicholas Ray. In the lower right corner, the photo is marked "DEAN - 9." Dean is posed in front of the famous Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, which was the location for two scenes from the film, including an iconic knife fight. The picture also starred Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo. In neat, flowing script, Dean signed the publicity still with a steel-tip fountain pen, using black ink. Dan wrote, "To Jackie Davis/Sincerely/James Dean." The photo has a number of minor imperfections: small folds and slight surface cracks, and some corner damage. The photo comes with a JSA LOA (Cert. #YY37967).
