Presented is an intriguing section of a 1919 Joe Jackson & the Chicago "Black Sox" original Type I team photo. Although the PSA certification that comes with the photo section lists the offering date as "circa 1919," the photo date is unmistakably 1919. The offered photo section measures approx. 7.2x8.4", and it shows a vertical tear on the left from where the photo was divided into approximate halves. A dozen members of the team are shown in the offered photo section. Joe Jackson and seven other members of the 1919 White Sox were later banned for life from "organized Baseball" by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis for their unreported association with gamblers when the ways and means of throwing the World Series were discussed. The 1919 White Sox lost that season's best-of-nine World Series to the Cincinnati Reds by a 5-3 margin in games. Pictured in the offered photo section: Top Row, left-to-right: Nemo Liebold, OF; Fred McMullen, INF (banned Black Sox); F. Murphy, OF; Eddie Cicotte P (banned Black Sox); Charles "Swede" Risberg, SS, (banned Black Sox); Urban "Red" Fabor, P. Front Row, left-to-right: William "Kid" Gleason, MGR; Eddie Collins, 2B; George "Buck" Weaver, 3B (banned Black Sox); Oscar "Happy" Felsch, OF (banned Black Sox); Joe Jackson, OF (banned Black Sox); William James, P. In total, six of the banned Black Sox are shown in the photo. Chick Gandil, the team's first baseman and the main ringleader of the banned Black Sox, is in the whole picture, but in the other (not offered) section of the photo, and for some reason Claude "Lefty" Williams, a star pitcher and one of the ultimately banned Black Sox, was not in either section of the entire photo. On back, an unknown hand has written, in pencil, "Chicago Whi[te]... Sept...." which indicates that the photo was taken in September 1919, before the start of the World Series, which began on Oct. 1st that season. The photo section has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC." The offering has uneven margins on the left and at the top, and there are a few stains or discolorations in the middle and upper left. With the exception of the aforementioned imperfections, the photo is in nice condition.
