Original carte de visite (CDV) capturing the 1870 Chicago White Stockings. PSA has encapsulated the CDV and certified it as “Authentic.” This is the first example of this 1870 Chicago White Stockings team CDV we have ever seen, and it may be unique. Despite the lack of any printed information on the CDV (other than the photographer’s name), we have seen this photographic image on two separate 1870 trade cards, both of which identified the team as the 1870 White Stockings and identified the players by name. This is one of the earliest “baseball cards” in the hobby and the fact that it appears to be the lone surviving example makes it both historically significant and desirable.
The photograph pictures eleven members of the Chicago White Stockings posing together in a formal studio setting. According to the player identifications on the aforementioned trade cards, the players pictured here are Kearl, Duffy, Treacey, Hodes, Flynn, Cuthbert, Meyerle, Pinkham, Wood, McAtee, and King. The following season, seven of the players pictured here were on the roster of Chicago’s 1871 entry in the National Association, baseball’s first professional league (Kearl, Flynn, Cuthbert, and Meyerle are the four exceptions). The photographer’s credit, “Brand/28 Washington St./Chicago,” appears on the reverse.
The CDV (4.25x2.5 inches), which exhibits exceptional clarity, displays light corner wear to the mount and is otherwise in Excellent condition.
