Displayed is a circa early 1960s subway sign for the original Yankee Stadium in The Bronx in New York City. Then home to both the New York Yankees and the New York Football Giants, the Stadium had an elevated subway stop just beyond the right field wall. Yankee Stadium was located on East 161st Street and River Avenue. The B, D, and #4 subway trains all stopped there. A good portion of the stadium's fans would arrive by subway. The Yankees had tremendous teams in the early 1960s, winning five AL pennants in a row between 1960-64, and the '61 and '62 World Series. Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford, joined by slugger Roger Maris, with his 61 record-breaking homer total in '61, were the main attractions. The New York Football Giants won Eastern Conference championships from 1961-63. Hall of Famers such as Frank Gifford, Y.A. Tittle, Sam Huff and Emlen Tunnell were Giants mainstays. The offered enameled metal subway sign is small, measuring 7x9.6". The black sign has white trim, numerals, and lettering. The sign reads, "161/YS" with the "YS" indicating Yankee Stadium. The sign has a few small chips and some very small stains. On back are four 3/4" bolts and an accompanying washer for each, so that the sign could be attached. There is some minor rusting, at the edges. The sign weighs approx. 25 ounces. Overall, the subway sign is in very good condition, and it evokes great memories of Yankee Stadium, its home team players, and its subway stop from over six decades ago.
