Displayed is a terrific offering with the tremendous cross appeal of baseball and entertainment: An original script of the October 6, 1932, Fleischmann's Yeast Hour radio show, starring the immortal Rudy Vallee, on which Lou Gehrig has a featured part in humorously giving the "inside dope" on Babe Ruth's iconic "Called Shot" home run in the 3rd Game of the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. Along with the fascinating radio script, the offering also includes five Rudy Vallee signed checks, presumably involving payment for those who worked on the Fleischmann's Yeast Hour show.

During this time in '32, the Fleischmann's Yeast Hour was the most popular show on radio, at a time before television, when radio was king. At the time of the Oct. 6th show, Vallee was arguably the biggest star in show business. He sang, played saxophone, and was a bandleader. The aforementioned radio program was a mere four days after the last game of the Yankees' four-game World Series sweep, and only five days after Ruth's called shot in Game 3. The offered typed radio script is eleven pages, and it measures 8.5x11". Page 1 of the script reads, in part: "FLEISCHMANN'S YEAST HOUR October 6, 1932/8:00-9:00 P.M./Thursday/VALLEE; (Over theme)  Heigho ho everybody...this is Rudy Vallee announcing and directing the Fleischmann's Yeast Hour." On page 9 of this script, Gehrig discusses the called shot: Babe had two strikes on him...fifty thousand Cub fans were giving him the old Bronx cheer...and the Cub players were riding him from the field...So what does he do? He stands up and tells the world he's going to sock the next one.... He called his shot and then made it...." On the first page of the script, written in pencil by an unknown hand, is "Vallee." The script has intriguing, original penciled in corrections. At the top of page 1, there is a thin stain caused by the rusting of a paper clip used to attach the pages of the script. The pages exhibit a slight darkening because of the passage of years. Also, included are five Rudy Vallee signed checks, written on the Manufacturers Trust Company. The signed checks measure 3.1x8.25", and each check is dated "October 6, 1932." The checks are for amounts ranging from $26.00 to 60.00. The checks have RUDY VALLEE machine-printed on both the side and the bottom. Vallee signed each check, in neat, big and bold script with a blue fountain pen, and Vallee, whose name is French Canadian, included an acute accent on the first "E" of his last name. The checks, all cashed, usually have about two creases, but are in otherwise EXCELLENT condition. This unique offering gives an inside look at Ruth's famous 'Called Shot," shows Gehrig in an extended radio bit, and provides five Vallee check signatures, and thus makes an outstanding memorabilia opportunity with amazing cross-appeal.
