Hall of Fame right-hander Leroy "Satchel" Paige pitched professionally in the Negro Leagues from 1926-47. Presented is a Satchel Paige Kansas City Monarchs signed magazine photo. Paige officially pitched during eight seasons with the Monarchs (1940-47) of the Negro American League. He is credited with a lifetime Kansas City Monarchs record of 32-23, with a 2.36 ERA. He broke into the Major Leagues with the Cleveland Indians in 1948, the first African American pitcher in the American League, and his 6-1 record helped the Indians to the AL pennant. Paige seemingly finished his Major League pitching in 1953, with the St. Louis Browns, but he came out of retirement in 1965 to pitch three scoreless innings for the Kansas City Athletics, at age 59, against the Boston Red Sox, with the lone Boston hit being a double by Carl Yastrzemski. The records of the Negro Leagues are very sketchy, so statistics are very incomplete, but Paige was a star for numerous teams in the Negro Leagues and pitched in an estimated two thousand games all told, counting exhibitions and games in Mexico, around the Caribbean, and in South America. The offered magazine photo measures 7.8x10.75". Paige signed the photo in neatly scripted writing, in blue ink. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as AUTHENTIC AUTO. The photo exhibits some slight foxing and minor darkening, but it is in overall nice condition.
