Displayed is a terrific 1955 Phil Rizzuto original Topps photo used for his 1955 Topps Card (#189). Rizzuto's Hall of Fame shortstop career was entirely with the New York Yankees (1941-42 & 1946-56). The 5-time All-Star was a 7-time World Champion with the Bronx Bombers. The image, now iconic, appears to have been taken during spring training. "The Scooter" was always known for his sense of humor, both as a player and later a famed broadcaster. In this obviously "set up" photo, you can almost see the twinkle in Phil's eyes as he jumps high, but he keeps his glove low. Does Rizzuto have his eye on the ball, which presumably would have been a rocket line drive if the photo wasn't posed? No, he looks at the camera, almost breaking out in a laugh. The Scooter seems to be mimicking using his glove to protect himself from a baseball hitting him in a very, delicate area. It's actually quite a memorable image, and it appears on his 1955 Topps card, from a set that usually had two photos on the front of each card, a headshot, and an action shot. The Scooter wasn't playing as a full-time regular in '55, but his Yankees won another pennant that season but lost the World Series in seven games to give the Brooklyn Dodgers the team's lone Brooklyn World Championship. The photo measures 8x10". Rizzuto's name is written on the photo, but it is very faded and hardly noticeable. After nearly 70 years, it shows some minor, and expected, slight darkening. Overall, the image is in EXCELLENT condition. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as "TYPE I AUTHENTIC."
