Presented is a 1965 Donn Clendenon Pittsburgh Pirates game worn, sleeveless home jersey. Clendenon, a first baseman, was the stepson of a famed catcher of the Negro Leagues, Nish Williams. Donn was coached on numerous teams by his stepfather, including when Donn attended Morehouse College. In addition, Nish Williams knew numerous former players from the Negro Leagues who gave Clendenon advice and playing tips over many years: Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe, and Roy Campanella among them. Clendenon played 12 Major League seasons: Pittsburgh Pirates (1961-68), Montreal Expos (1969), New York Mets (1969-71), St. Louis Cardinals (1972). The 6'4" initial sacker batted a career .270, with 159 home runs. In '65, when Clendenon game wore this jersey, he was on a talented Pirates team with future Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, and Bill Mazeroski, but the Pirates finished in third place. He batted .301, with 14 home runs, 89 runs scored, and 96 RBIs for the Pirates in '65. The highlight of Clendenon's career was in 1969 when he hit three home runs in the World Series to become the World Series MVP as the underdog "Miracle Mets" won the World Championship over the Baltimore Orioles. The offered jersey appears to be all original, with nice use. Across the chest is "Pirates" in black sewn-on letters with gold trim. On the lower, outside tail is a Rawlings manufacturer's tag showing size 44. On the lower left inner tail is a washing instructions tag. The back has "17" in black sewn-on numerals with gold trim. The "1" numeral on back has a faint stitching outline around it, an indication that it may have been put on, taken off, and then put back on again. This was definitely done by the team. There is a "Set 1 1965" flag tag inside the front tail. Seven silver-gray buttons run down the front. The jersey has a stain just below the back collar and a few very small stains in other areas. Overall, the jersey is in nice condition.
