The Brooklyn Dodgers won the team's first and only World Championship in 1955, defeating the New York Yankees in seven games, and the team assembled for spring training in 1956 determined to repeat as World Champions. Offered is an Associated Press original news service Type I photograph of the top five Dodger catchers at the team's Vero Beach training facility. The Dodgers did claim the '56 National League Pennant but lost the '56 World Series in seven games to the Yankees. The '56 pecking order for Dodger catching is readily apparent from the photo. In the front row, a smiling and relaxed Roy Campanella seems to be ahead of the player to his left, backup catcher Rube Walker. Campanella should have been smiling. In '55, he was the NL MVP. It was the third and final time Campanella would be the NL MVP, and he had his last great season, batting .318 with 32 home runs and 107 RBIs. Rube Walker was an effective backup catcher who played 11 Major League seasons, mostly with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. The other players in this 7x9.25" photo never made the Major Leagues. From left, they are catchers Herb Olson, Don Williams, and Mike Napoli. The back of the photo includes an Associate Press slug line identifying the players and a notation, written in pencil in an unknown hand, that reads, "RB[?] Teams - Brooklyn Dodgers." The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified TYPE I AUTHENTIC. The image is in EXCELLENT condition.
