Displayed is a 1953 Roy Campanella Type I Associated Press photograph from his second season as the NL MVP. The Hall of Fame catcher played eight seasons in the Negro Leagues, stymied from making the Major Leagues because of the "color line." Finally, a season after Jackie Robinson integrated the modern Major Leagues, Campanella became a Brooklyn Dodger in 1948 and played his entire MLB career with the Brooklyn Dodgers. "Campy," a superb defensive backstop, batted a career .276, with 242 home runs. He was the NL MVP in '51, '53, and '55. In the 1953 season when the offered photo originated, Campanella batted .312 with 41 home runs and an NL-leading 142 RBIs. He was a major force on Brooklyn's '55 World Champions. In the winter before the Dodgers began play in Los Angeles in 1958, Campanella was severely injured in an automobile crash and became a paraplegic. Nevertheless, he later became a coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers and worked in the team's front office. The offered photo measures 7.2x9". It is in EXCELLENT condition, and it shows Campanella with a warm smile. It has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as TYPE I AUTHENTIC.
