Displayed is a unique offering: The 1995 red, white, and blue New York City Marathon finish line banner. Measuring a height of 36" and a length of 46 feet, this is a banner just made for the city known as The Big Apple. In fact, the colorful banner actually has several images of a big apple on it. The banner would make a creative, great finish line banner for an informal race, or to make a fun finish line for a fund-raising race or a race for kids. Also, if the long banner is folded, a segment of it showing "New York City Marathon Finish" could be a fascinating addition to a trophy room or man cave. The '95 NYC Marathon was held on Sunday, November 12th. The Men's Elite Race was won by Mexico's German Silva in a time of 2:11:00 hours, and the Women's Elite Race was taken by Kenya's Tegla Loroupe, with a time of 2:28:06. Finishing the race by crossing under this banner in Central Park was a total of 26,754 persons: 20,284 men and 6,470 women. Much of the letters and numbers on the banner are 10" long. Some of the letters and numbers are smaller. The letters and numbers on the banner, from the viewer's left to right: CITY OF NEW YORK (in green), with a green and white NYC Park Department Logo; FINISH, (in 10" white letters on a red background); RUNNERS WORLD (an advertisement); NEW YORK CITY (in 10" blue letters); MARATHON, (in blue letters with the letter "o" turned into a Big Apple); 1995 (in blue 7" letters); FINISH, (for a third time); New York (in 3" blue letters); the New York Road Runners Club "NYRRC" (with the club emblem); Road Runners Club, with the letter "o" again being displayed as a Big Apple). There are metal grommets, used for hanging the banner, approx. every 18". The banner shows great wear, with a few small stains, smudges, etc. In the year 1995 on the number, the "5" in 1995 has obviously, as probably planned ahead of time for economy's sake, replaced the number of one or more previous races, with earlier use being 1994 at minimum. In addition to this banner, we even have the full race outfit worn by the Men's Elite winner, German Silva, in this same auction. It's such a colorful, larger-than-life banner, a great remembrance of New York City, a banner so fitting for the 1995 Big Race in the Big Apple.
