Displayed is an extremely rare, 1920s Type I original photograph of Hall of Famer Andrew "Rube" Foster, a pitcher, manager, and executive in the Negro Leagues. Foster was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a Pioneer/Executive. Any image of Foster is exceptionally rare, and this offering is originally from the Foster Family Collection. Foster is considered by many baseball pundits' to have been the premier African American hurler from the 1910s era. Foster was a 5'9", 230 lbs. pitcher who played from 1902-17 with numerous teams in the United States and Cuba. He is most remembered for his pitching with the Chicago American Giants. In 1920, Foster founded the Negro American League, which lasted from 1920-31, the longest-lasting Negro League at that time, and Foster is credited as being the "Father of Black Baseball." Foster was a playing manager with the Chicago American Giants for a key part of his career, and he managed the team to four pennants. In the offering, Foster, known for his stylish dressing, is wearing a suit and top hat. The offering measures 3x5.1" and appears to have been trimmed on the right margin. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. On the verso, hand-printed in pencil by an unknown hand, is "Rube Foster from Family." The verso also has a photographer's stamp reading, "De Luxe Studio/Hot Springs, Ark." The photo is in EXCELLENT condition.
