Offered is a lot of one-of-a-kind rare photographs of Whirlaway, an American thoroughbred racehorse, and fifth winner of the coveted American Triple Crown. Included in the lot are the following photos: In winner’s circle at Churchill Downs; overhead shot winning the Kentucky Derby (Photo by Caufield & Shook); arriving for Preakness with trainer Ben Jones; trainer Ben Jones leading Whirlaway onto track for exercise; start of the Preakness with Whirlaway off last; being cooled down; with jockey Longden after a 1940 race; headshot by Bert & Richard Morgan studios; working out; winning Saranac Handicap at Saratoga; after winning the Lawrence Realization; after winning the Massachusetts Handicap with George Woolf up; winning Brooklyn Handicap with George Woolf aboard; working out for Arlington Handicap; retired at Washington Park led away by owner Wright & Ben Jones; emerging from 191-day retirement, finished 3rd to stablemate Mar-Kell; rounders beating Whirlaway in Arlington Handicap; exercising with renowned Calumet employee Pinkey Brown; being led around Wash. Park; and at Lexington after retirement. The photos are in excellent condition overall and are stored in archival page protectors.
