Presented is an early 1960s Fred Hutchinson Cincinnati Reds' game worn cap. Hutchinson was a Major League pitcher who played for the Detroit Tigers during 11 seasons and had a lifetime record of 95-71, with a career 3.73 ERA. Known as "Hutch," he later became a manager: Detroit Tigers (1952-54), St. Louis Cardinals (1956-58), and Cincinnati Reds (1959-64). He was well-respected by his players, but he had a terrific temper, which he would take out by kicking clubhouse furniture after a loss. When Hutch was managing the Tigers, the Yankees' catcher, Yogi Berra, described Hutchinson's temper: "I always know how Hutch did after we followed Detroit into a town," said Berra. "If we got stools in the dressing room, I know he won. If we got kindling, he lost." Hutchinson's Cincinnati Reds won the 1961 NL pennant but lost in the World Series to the New York Yankees. Because Hutch was battling cancer, he could not complete the 1964 season with the Cincinnati Reds. The road cap is gray, with a red bill, red C, and red button on top. The cap shows nice use, but it is also in great shape. Wilson size 7 3/8 tagging is inside. "1" is stamped in web material above the brim. According to an included letter from former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Jim O'Toole, this hat was given to him after by Reds clubhouse attendant, Chesty Evans. It was given to O'Toole after Evans cleaned out Hutchinson's locker after the 1964 season. This could very well be Hutchinson's last cap. The Wilson coding inside indicates that the cap was made in 1961, but just because it was made that year does not mean that it was only used that year, so, it could have been used in 1964. This is not unusual as teams ordered large quantities of caps and held extras over for subsequent seasons, or this could have been an older cap that was kept in his locker. We will never know for sure, but we do know for sure that Hutch wore this cap.
