Presented is an original color photo of the three Notre Dame co-captains for the 1978 season: Joe Montana, Bob Golic, and Jerome Heavens. The three players are posed in Notre Dame stadium, each with an index finger in the air in the classic "We're Number One" signal. It's unclear when the photo was taken. It most likely was at some point after Notre Dame's terrific 1977 season, when the Fighting Irish went 11-1, winning the National Championship at the Cotton Bowl by a 38-10 score against the Texas Longhorns, nationally ranked as Number One before the game. The photo could also have been signed during the 1978 spring practice or even before the opening of the 1978 season. In '78, the Fighting Irish went 9-3, ending the season with another Cotton Bowl victory, this time against the University of Houston. The players are all wearing the special green Notre Dame jerseys, instead of the normal blue or white jersey. Notre Dame has traditionally used green jerseys throughout the years as a surprise tactic in a special game to motivate Notre Dame's players and fans. Left to right: Jerome Heavens, Joe Montana, and Bob Golic. Heavens was a fullback/running back who was the second leading ground gainer for the Irish in 1978. He later played for the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Football League. Montana was Notre Dame's first-string quarterback in '78, completing 141 of 260 passes for 1,192 yards and seven touchdowns. Of course, Montana later became a Pro Football Hall of Famer after his great pro career with the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs. Bob Golic was an All-American linebacker who intercepted a pair of passes during the 78 season and later played pro football for three NFL teams. All three players signed in "Notre Dame" green marker. Montana and Golic personalized their signatures with an inscription to a Mrs. York. The offered photograph has been encapsulated and PSA graded AUTO 10/TYPE I/AUTHENTIC. The photograph is in EXCELLENT condition.
