Displayed is a 1931 Baseball Tour of Japan team-signed baseball with 18 autographs, including Lou Gehrig's. After the 1931 Major League baseball season, a 14-player MLB tour of Japan was organized by Herb Hunter and sportswriter Fred Lieb. Gehrig (and Babe Ruth) hit 46 home runs in '31, and Gehrig batted .341 with 185 RBIs, but the Yankees finished second in the American League, even with a 94-59 record. The United States team won all 17 of its games against Japanese University or semi-professional teams, plus the American team also won an additional game against a Japanese All-Star team. This '31 tour did not gather the amount of publicity that the '34 United States Tour of Japan garnered with Babe Ruth, and thus artifacts, such as this signed team ball, are scarcer for the '31 Tour than for the '34 Tour. Some of the (18) autographs: Hall of Famers - Lou Gehrig (very faint), Rabbit Maranville, Frank "Lefty" O'Doul, Frank Frisch, Lefty Grove, Al Simmons (ss). Plus, Billy Cunningham, Larry French, Willie Kamm, Ralph Shinners, umpire Beans Reardon, writer Fred Lieb, Herb Hunter. The autos are signed on an Official Six University League of Tokyo baseball, in excellent condition. Personalized "To Our Good Friend _____, From the All-Star Team Touring Japan, Nov. 1931." Some of the autos are faint or in other ways difficult to read. The autos average 4/10. Full LOA from PSA.
