Presented is a circa 1909 original photograph of Eddie Grant as a Philadelphia Phillie, applying a tag at third base against Moose McCormick of the New York Giants. Sadly, Grant later became the first Major League player killed in World War I. This photo was used for the T202 card of Grant. He played in the Major Leagues for ten seasons: Cleveland Naps (1905), Philadelphia Phillies (1907-10), Cincinnati Reds (1911-13), New York Giants (1913-15). Grant was mainly a starting second baseman, but late in his career, when playing for the Giants, he became a utility infielder. He was known for his fielding and base stealing. Grant batted a career .249, with 153 stolen bases. He graduated from Harvard University as an undergraduate in 1905, and he graduated from Harvard's School of Law in 1909. Of course, two Harvard degrees was certainly unusual for a ballplayer in the early 1900s, or at any time, so naturally he became known as "Harvard Eddie." After he retired from playing baseball, Grant practiced law in Massachusetts, and he was one of the first ballplayers or former ballplayers to enter the military service when the United States entered World War I. As an Army Captain, Grant's superior officers were all wounded or killed so he was in command with the famous "Lost Battalion." He took part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and he was mortally wounded on Oct. 5, 1918, by an exploding enemy artillery shell. Grant was one of eight current or former MLB players who lost his life during military service in World War I. The other player in the photo, Moose McCormick, was playing for the New York Giants in 1909. McCormick also served in the U.S. Army in World War I, serving as a First Lieutenant and Captain in combat in France. The offered photo measures 7.25x9.5". The photo was taken by Paul Thompson, of New York City, and his stamp is on the back. Also, on back is a stamped "THE PING" and "McCormick, NY out at third/GRANT 3B," written in pencil by an unknown hand. The photo has one tiny spot and some wrinkling, mostly near the corners. The photo comes with a PSA LOA.
