Presented is a 1946 Johnny Mize original news service photograph used for the Hall of Fame first baseman's '51 Berk Ross card image. Nicknamed "Big Jawn" and "the Big Cat," Mize played in the Major Leagues from 1936-53: St. Louis Cardinals (1936-41), New York Giants (1942, 1945-49), New York Yankees (1949-53). The left-handed batter hit a career .312 with 359 home runs and 2,011 hits. He was a 5-time World Series Champion and a 10-time All-Star. In '39, Mize won the NL batting crown with a .349 batting average. In that season, he also led the NL in home runs (28), slugging (.626), and OPS (1.070). Mize missed three seasons (1943-45) for military service during World War II. The offered black & white photo measures 6.5x8.4". The International News Photos offering has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as Type I AUTHENTIC. The '46 photo was taken when Mize was with the New York Giants. On back is a March 4, 1946, International News Photos caption slug, which reads, in part, "'BIG JAWN' OF THE GIANTS CONNECTS WITH A FAST ONE.... JOHNNY, RECENTLY OUT OF THE SERVICE, IS AGAIN TRAINING WITH THE GIANTS AT MIAMI...." The back also has an International News Photo stamp. The beautiful photo shot shows Mize's sweet swing, with his classic follow-through. The photo is in excellent condition.
