Washington Senators program, with special Babe Ruth testimonial insert, issued for the final game of the 1934 season in which Babe Ruth played his final game as a member of the New York Yankees. The historic game took place at Washington's Griffith Stadium on September 30th and a crowd of over 15,000 turned out to say goodbye to Ruth. Although Ruth had made no formal retirement announcement, he had been hinting at retirement all season, and it was clear to nearly everyone that this would be his final game. In anticipation of the event, the Senators presented Ruth with a special testimonial certificate signed by President Franklin Roosevelt, a copy of which was inserted into each program. The fold-over insert features a large photo of Ruth on the front cover and an advertisement for the Washington Times on the back cover. Ruth's final game in pinstripes was anticlimactic, as he went hitless in three at bats, plus a walk. After his final at bat the in the eighth inning, which resulted in a fly out to centerfield, Ruth returned to the bench in tears. Myril Hoag replaced him in right field in the bottom of the frame. Of course, as we know, Ruth was lured out of retirement the following spring when he failed to get a managerial job, and ended his career with the Boston Braves in June, 1935. The program (7.25x11") has been neatly scored in pencil and remains in Excellent to Mint condition. The insert (14.25x11.25"; unfolded) displays minor age toning and a tiny tear at each end of the fold line. Very Good condition overall.
