Here is a mystery. This shirt has been in the hobby for years as a game worn Red Kelly from the late 1950’s. Everything checks out except for one detail: the crest is wrong. This sweater displays the crest that was worn on the white wool sweaters. Otherwise, it is a game worn wool Red Wings sweater, tagged in the collar by Olympic with the 46 size tag below. Single ply number “4” appears on the back and shoulder, correct for the late 1950’s, and it has a crudely stitched Captain’s “C” on the right breast (also correct). Red wore the “C” for two seasons in the late Fifties. The sweater shows wear and had a number of Detroit-style circular wool team repairs. The back number sports a bold Red Kelly signature. Buy it for a song and find the photo to prove it right!
