AFL game-used trophy ball, commemorating a Kansas City Chiefs 37-10 victory over the Denver Broncos in 1966, originating from the personal collection of former Chiefs All-Pro linebacker/center E.J. Holub. What makes this ball significant is that it is a rare official AFL ball bearing the stamped facsimile signature of AFL Commissioner Al Davis. Davis, who was also the owner of the Oakland Raiders, was the league's commissioner for just four months in 1966. Given his brief tenure, official AFL balls bearing his facsimile signature are exceedingly rare and have always been highly coveted by collectors. This is the first we have offered and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another. The Spalding official AFL "J5-V" football with white stripes, bears a painted white panel that has been lettered "Chiefs 37 Broncos 10" in red-and-black paint, above which is the date: "10-8-66." The ball was once signed by members of the Chiefs, but all of the signatures have faded beyond legibility. Official AFL footballs at the time were produced with or without white stripes, with the white-striped balls used exclusively for night games. Research indicates that the game between the Chiefs and Broncos on 10/8/66 was played on a Saturday night in Kansas City. The ball displays moderate use consistent with its game used status. There is also moderate crazing to the painted graphics and the ball is slightly deflated. The ball is accompanied by a wire photo and newspaper photos picturing the ball on display with Holub's other trophies and awards at his home. Together with a signed letter of provenance from Holub's wife.
