In 2011-12, the New York Knicks were shorthanded because of injuries and the Knicks started guard Jeremy Lin, who became the first American of Taiwanese or Chinese descent to play in the NBA. Lin had been an effective player at Harvard University, and in his first pro season he played in 29 games as a substitute with the Golden State Warriors. In the 2011-12 season, he had even spent time playing in the NBA's D League, a developmental minor league. In February of that season, Lin became an almost overnight phenomenon as he became a scoring and playmaking marvel, sparking the Knicks to a seven-game winning streak and eventual inclusion in the playoffs and causing a phenomenon to develop called "Linsanity" Fans became Jeremy Lin fans, rooting for his underdog situation, and many Asian and Asian American fans became widely supportive of his play. For two months his jerseys became the league's best-selling shirts, and Lin was featured on the covers of Sports Illustrated and Time. Lin spent only that single season with the Knicks. He later played for six other NBA teams as inconsistency and injuries hampered his play. He most recently played overseas for the New Taipei Kings.
