Displayed is a Willie Mays and Bobby Thomson signed United Press International photo showing the two New York Giants outfielders at the Polo Grounds during the Giants' magical 1951 season. In that year, the Giants trailed their arch-rival, the Brooklyn Dodgers, by 13-and-a-half games in mid-August, yet finished in a tie with the Dodgers at the end of the season and had to play a 2-out-of-3 game playoff for the pennant. Thomson's home three-run homer in the 9th inning gave the Giants the walk-off win, called "The Miracle of Coogan's Bluff" and also "The Shot Heard 'Round the World." Earlier that season, Mays had been with the Giants' top farm team at Minneapolis, and he batted an astounding .477 in 35 games. The Giants called him up to the Majors and he took over in center field, moving Thomson, an excellent center fielder, to left field and later to third base. Mays batted .274 in '51, with 20 home runs and he was the NL Rookie of the Year. The third player in the photo is the Giants' shortstop, Alvin Dark. Mays signed the photo using a blue marker, and signing in a bold, neat manner with his usual flair. Thomson signed in blue ink. The 7x9" photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA Certified as Type II AUTHENTIC. The photo exhibits some very slight foxing but is in overall nice condition.
