Presented is a May 6, 1937 Type III original, Associated Press News Service Photo of the Hindenburg Disaster, when the German airship caught fire during a landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The LZ 129 Hindenburg was a commercial airship that carried 36 passengers and had a crew of 61. The flight left Germany on May 3rd, and it was the first airship crossing from Germany to the U.S. of the year. Many newsmen were on the ground at Naval Air Station Lakehurst to witness the landing, and newsreels recorded the incident. The airship was filled with hydrogen, and at 7:25 p.m. local time, the airship suddenly caught fire and burst into flames. Fatalities included 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. Herbert Morrison, reporting for radio station WLS, in Chicago, made a contemporaneous account of the disaster that was recorded and broadcast the next day. Morrison became quite emotional as he witnessed the tragedy, and his account included his heart-breaking, iconic description, which said, in part:"It's burst into flames and it's falling on the mooring mast and all the folks between it... Oh, the humanity... This is the worst thing I've ever witnessed." Afterward, many theories for the fire were raised, including a number of sabotage plots, but the true cause of the disaster has never been determined. The 7x9" photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA, which reads in part, "Photo is a period example that was made by the A.P. from a duplicate negative featuring an image captured by Paramount News."
