While it goes without saying that star athletes have always received special privileges in society, such as at restaurants, or shows, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) plays no such favorites. Everyone, regardless of social status, still has to shlep down to their local DMV, fill out countless forms, wait in long lines, and then get their picture taken to receive their license. Such was the case for Mickey Mantle when he received the offered license from the Texas Dept. of Public Safety in the late 1960s. This is just the second Mickey Mantle drivers license we have ever seen at public auction and of those two, the only one that appears to date from his playing career (the other, which expired in 1987, appeared as Lot 563 in Lelands 2017 Masters Auction, where it realized $21,780). Mantle's photo appears in the lower right corner, and his signature is scripted in black ink (grading 6/10) along the base. As noted on the card, the license expires on Mantle's birth date in 1971. While we do not know for how long Texas driver's licenses remained valid at the time, four years seems to be the standard for most states. If so, then this license was issued around 1967, which was Mantle's penultimate season in the Majors. The license (3x2"), which has been laminated, is faded, but all the information remains legible. There is also a moderate vertical crease that occurred after the lamination process. This is certainly one of the rarest of all Mickey Mantle personal items circulating in the hobby and one that would be among the highlights of any advanced Mickey Mantle collection.
