Presented is a Mel Ott 1933 Acme News PSA Type I photo of the Hall of Fame right fielder who spent his entire Major League playing career with the Giants (1926-47)."This lad is going to be one of the greatest hitters the NL has seen," said New York Giants Hall of Fame manager John McGraw after 16-year old Mel Ott tried out for the Giants in September of 1925. McGraw was right. Ott batted .304 lifetime, with 511 home runs. In 1933, when the offered photo was shot, the New York Giants became the World Champions, with the 24-year-old Ott batting .283, with 23 homers and 103 RBIs. When Ott retired as a player, his 511 home runs were higher than any other National League player in history, and Ott's home run total was behind only Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx in Major League history. Mel Ott felt he was lucky to have a very short name when he was asked for autographs: "Every time I sign a ball, and there must have been thousands, I thank my luck that I wasn't born Coveleski, or Wambsganss or Peckinpaugh," said the popular Ott. In fact, Mel was so popular that in a War Fund Drive in 1944, he was voted as the most popular sports hero of all time, ahead of Ruth, Gehrig, Mathewson, Joe Lewis, and Jack Dempsey. The offered photo, which appears to have been slightly trimmed along the left margin, measures 4.6x6.9". It has been encapsulated and PSA certified Type I AUTHENTIC. Ott was so young, at only 17, when he began his Major League career that he was nicknamed, Master Melvin, but he became a legend and the offered photo captures Ott, at 24 years old, just as he was entering his prime.
