Presented is a circa 1950 Type III composite photo taken on the set of The Jackie Robinson Story, a feature biographical film that depicts Robinson's struggle to become the first African American player in modern baseball. The film was produced by Jewel Pictures and directed by Alfred C. Green. The crew of the 77-minute black and white film spent much time filming at Gilmore Field, home of the Pacific Coast League's Hollywood Stars. Robinson played himself in the movie, and he displayed some nice acting ability. Ruby Dee starred as Rae Robinson, Jackie's wife, and Minor Watson played Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who planned to have Robinson break the so-called "Color Line" in the Major Leagues. The film generally was praised by the critics, and the box office did reasonably well. Movie reviewer Bosley Crowther said of Robinson's performance: "And Mr. Robinson did that rare thing of playing himself in the picture in a leading role. He displays a calm assurance and composure that might be envied by many a Hollywood star." The photo is approx. 8x10". Robinson appears four times in the collage: As a minor leaguer as a Montreal Royal; as himself in 1950, supposedly looking at some film rushes; Robinson in a dugout; Robinson with Ruby Dee. Also in the collage is Rachel Robinson, Jackie's wife. In the bottom left corner of the photo is a paper typed "tag" that reads: "'Jackie Robinson Story' set, July 1952." The tag, placed on the photo by an unknown person, has the year and season wrong, as the film was shot in the off-season after Robinson's 1949 season with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA Certified as TYPE III AUTHENTIC. The photo is in excellent condition.
