St. Louis Cardinals jersey worn by pitcher Max Macon during his 1938 rookie season. Lelands has photo-matched the jersey to an undated photo of Macon as a member of the Cardinals (images included with the jersey). The gray flannel jersey features "Cardinals" embroidered across the front, above which is the club's familiar logo of two cardinals perched upon opposite ends of a baseball bat. The number 16 is displayed on the reverse in red on navy felt. Both a "Rawlings" label and "42" size tag appear in the collar. The name "Max Macon" is chain-stitched in red on the left front tail. Despite the fact that no year is listed, Macon played for the Cardinals only in 1938, thereby conclusively dating the jersey to that season. The jersey is original as issued and displays heavy wear, including several large team repairs on the reverse and minor loss to the piping on the rear of the collar. Macon made his Major League debut with the Cardinals in 1938. The left-handed pitcher appeared in 38 games during his rookie campaign, finishing the year with a record of 4-11 and a 4.11 ERA. He played sporadically in the Majors for another five seasons before eventually retiring from professional baseball in 1955 (his minor-league career spanned the years 1934-1955).
