Displayed is a wonderfully colorful Joe DiMaggio signed, LeRoy Neiman 20x24" limited print, 94/444. Neiman was a famous expressionist artist known for his paintings and screenprints of athletes, sports events, and musicians. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, mostly as a cook. Later, the Army discovered his artistic bent and Neiman began painting sets for theatrical productions. Neiman graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and after a meeting with Hugh Hefner, Neiman began a long association doing art illustrations for Playboy magazine. Over a long career, Neiman traveled the world from his home in New York City, and prints of his work remain enormously popular. He passed away in 2012. In the offered print, Neiman makes great use of splashes of bright color, one of his trademarks. Joltin' Joe is depicted wearing a New York Yankees away uniform, in an unknown stadium. The Hall of Fame centerfielder is shown in his wide stride, in his classic, long follow-through. The sinews are evident in Joe's forearms, and even DiMaggio's face reveals the strain of his powerful swing. The Joe DiMaggio autograph is written in blue ink, most likely with a fine-tip marker. The DiMaggio signature is light and is partially smudged, but still clearly a valued signature from the Yankee Clipper. The print has some edge wear, with a 3/4-inch tear on the white border on the right side. Despite any of the aforementioned slight imperfections, the autographed print combines the painting artistry of LeRoy Neiman with the batting artistry of Joe DiMaggio to create an attention-catching, and prized, limited print.
