Color lithograph titled "The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation Before the Cabinet" (as noted in print along the base), issued in 1866. Additional text along the base identifies both the artist, "F. B. Carpenter" and the engraver, "A. H. Ritchie." The publisher is identified in fine print along the top border: "Fishel, Adler & Schwartz, 373 Fifth Avenue, New York." The finely rendered scene captures President Abraham Lincoln meeting at the White House with his cabinet, all of whom are identified in print along the base: Edwin M. Stanton (Secretary of War), Salmon P. Chase (Secretary of the Treasury), Gideon Welles (Secretary of the Navy), Caleb B. Smith (Secretary of the Interior), William H. Seward (Secretary of State), Montgomery Blair (Postmaster General), and Edward Bates (Attorney General). This is a famous historical artwork and it should be noted that F. B. Carpenter's original painting, which this engraving is based upon, resides in the permanent collection of the United States Senate. A copy of the engraving also resides in the Smithsonian Institute. The lithograph (33x22.5"; visible dimensions) remains in apparent Excellent to Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 40.5x30.5". Please note: The size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
