Displayed is a 1982 Bruce Dal Canton Atlanta Braves National League West Division Championship Ambassador watch awarded to the Braves pitching coach. Dal Canton played 11 Major League seasons. He had an unusual professional beginning as he was signed from an open Pittsburgh Pirates tryout when he was a high school teacher. Dal Canton played with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1967-70); Kansas City Royals (1971-75); Atlanta Braves (1975-76); and Chicago White Sox (1977). Both a starter and reliever, Dal Canton had a 51-49 career record, with a lifetime 3.67 ERA. Dal Canton learned to throw a knuckleball, among his other pitches. A native of Pennsylvania, Dal Canton had his best seasons for Pittsburgh, for whom he was 20-8, with a 3.57 ERA in four seasons. After his playing career, Dal Canton became a minor league pitching coach and then moved up as the Atlanta Braves pitching coach. In the 1982 season, the Braves were managed by Hall of Famer Joe Torre and the club finished 89-73 in the regular season, but were defeated 3-0 in games in the NL Championship Series by the St. Louis Cardinals. On Dal Canton's pitching staff: Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, who went 17-4 that season, plus Rick Camp, Bob Walk, Pasquel Perez, Rick Mahler, Gene Garber, and others. The very stylish Ambassador watch is in the original box and looks like it was never used. It is in NM-MT condition. The watch, when wound, did not run. Engraved on the back: "BEST IN THE WEST/1982/B.D. [the initials of the recipient]," and "Ambassador Imports LTD./Bass Metal Bezel/Stainless Steel Back."
