One-page typed letter, dated December 22, 1914, signed by William Taft, 27th President of the United States. In his letter, written on his personal letterhead to a "Miss Bett," Taft apologizes for not being able to accept an invitation to attend her luncheon. In part: "I would very much like to come to your luncheon on the 27th of February in order to congratulate the friends of Wellesley and her Alumni on the great work that has been done to meet the exigency presented by the fire. I have lecture engagements, however, in Cincinnati on February 24th, 25th and 26th, and I am afraid that it will be impossible for me to reach New York in time for your luncheon on the 27th." Signed by Taft in black fountain pen, with the signature grading 8/10. Taft was the Kent Professor of Law and Legal History at Yale University at the time of this letter. The fire he mentions was the historic blaze on March 17, 1914, that destroyed College Hall, the main building on the campus of Wellesley College. The letter (7x9.25") displays a horizontal fold and is in Excellent to Mint condition. Mounted (by means of photo corners) together in a framed display with the original mailing envelope (7.25x4.75"; VG), and a photo (modern print; 6.75x4.75") of Taft. Total dimensions: 22x16" Full LOA from JSA. Please note: The size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
