Rare cardboard advertising sign heralding a lightweight boxing match between Tony Canzoneri and Jimmy McLarnin at Madison Square Garden in New York City on May 8th. The attractive sign which was intended for display throughout the city to promote the fight, features large portrait photos of each boxer set upon their illustrated bodies in the ring. The headline reads "When Dynamite Meets Dynamite! - BOOM." Although no year is listed, research indicates that this bout took place in 1936. This was the first of two fights between the two former champions that year. Canzoneri won the bout on May 8th with a ten-round unanimous decision, while McLarnin won the rematch on October 5th, also by a ten-round unanimous decision. Canzoneri was one of the few boxers to hold titles in three different weight classes (featherweight, lightweight, and light welterweight) and he finished his career with 141 wins, 24 losses, and 10 draws. McLarnin was a two-time welterweight champion and retired in 1936 with a record of 55 wins, 11 losses, and 3 draws. Both are members of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The cardboard sign (12.75x15.75") displays light paper loss on the reverse and is otherwise in Excellent condition.
