Displayed is a beautiful Major League Baseball lifetime pass awarded to Hall of Fame second baseman Charlie Gehringer. The offered lifetime pass spells Gehringer's nickname as Charley, but usually Gehringer's nickname is spelled as Charlie. Either way you spell his nickname, Charles was known as the "Mechanical Man" and in Charlie Gehringer's case, that was a compliment. Basically, Gehringer's "Mechanical Man" nickname meant that he never called attention to himself, never caused trouble, and rarely chatted, but a manager could "wind him up" and he would perform outstanding baseball, day after day, as reliably as a mechanical man. Gehringer played 19 MLB seasons (1924-42), all with the Detroit Tigers. In the late season of 1923, Gehringer had a tryout at the Detroit Tigers' home ballpark, Navin Field. The Tigers' player-manager, Ty Cobb, was so enthusiastic about Gehringer's skills that he made sure that the Tigers signed him on the spot. Cobb relates, "I knew Charlie would hit, and I was so anxious to sign him that I didn't even take time to change out of my uniform before rushing him to the front office to sign him to a contract." Gehringer hit .320 lifetime, with 184 home runs and 181 stolen bases. In 1937, he led the AL in batting with a .371 average, and he was named the American League MVP. He was a part of three Detroit pennant-winning clubs and he was a key part of the 1935 Detroit World Champions. The pass measures 2.75x4.25". It reads, "The National/American/Major Leagues of Professional Baseball present this LIFETIME PASS to CHARLEY GEHRINGER in appreciation of long and meritorious service/William Harridge National League/Ford C. Frick National League." The metal pass looks as if it was re-plated at some point in time. It has a Lambert Bros. stamp on back. This pass originates from the Gehringer estate that was sold to Detroit dealer Jim Hankins decades ago. The pass is in EXCELLENT condition.
