Joe Montana was the MVP of Super Bowl XVI, held between Montana's San Francisco 49ers and the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 4, 1982, at the Pontiac Silverdome, in Pontiac, Michigan. Presented are two Montana signed checks relating to that Super Bowl, when the Hall of Fame quarterback ran for a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter and threw an 11-yard TD pass to Earl Cooper in the second quarter to help the 49ers to a 20-0 half time lead. Although the Cincinnati Bengals engineered a second-half comeback, San Francisco hung on for a 26-21 victory. Montana completed 14 of 22 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions and a "100" quarterback rating. Each of the checks measures approx. 2.75x5.9", and each is drawn on the Bank of America, Half Moon Bay Branch, in Half Moon Bay, Calif. Super Bowl XVI was played before 81,270 fans and a television audience of 85.24 million. Both checks have "Joe Montana" machine printed at the top. The Jan. 18th check was made to the "San Francisco 49ers" in the amount of $600.00 (six hundred dollars), for an unknown number of tickets, and the subject line of the check reads, "Super Bowl Tic" in blue ballpoint pen in an unknown hand. Montana neatly signed the check, as "Joe Montana" in blue ballpoint pen. The April 7, 1982, check (dated after the Super Bowl) was made out to the "SF Forty-Niners" in the amount of $300.00 (three hundred dollars), and the subject line of the check reads, "Super Bowl Plane Ticket" for an unknown number of plane tickets. Montana neatly signed the April 7th check in blue ballpoint as "Joe Montana." Montana's signed and cashed Super Bowl XVI-related checks make great mementos of his Super Bowl XVI MVP performance.
