Presented is a Sept. 30, 1972. Roberto Clemente 3,000 hit and final regular season game ticket stub from the Pittsburgh Pirates' home game at Three Rivers Stadium against the New York Mets. Hall of Famer Clemente was a 15-time All-Star, a 2-time World Champion, and a 12-time Gold Glove winner as a right fielder. The Pirates had already cliched the NL East and Pittsburgh was awaiting its upcoming NL Championship Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Jon Matlock, the Mets' starter who would become that year's NL Rookie of the Year, much later said in an interview with writer Tyler Kepner, "I was a 22-year-old rookie that had absolutely no clue this baseball icon was sitting on 2,999 when I went out to pitch the game. None." Clemente was in right field, batting third. In the first inning, Matlack struck out Clemente. In the 4th inning, Clemente led off the inning and hit Matlock's first pitch for a double to left field. This was Clemente's 3,000 hit, the first time any Latin American player had reached 3,000. Clemente later scored, and the Pirates tallied three runs to take the lead. In the 6th inning, Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski batted for Clemente and popped out to second. The Pirates won that game 5-0, and Clemente sat out the Pirates' meaningless final three regular season games. In the playoffs, Clemente resumed playing, but Cincinnati won the NL pennant by beating Pittsburgh 3-2 in games. On Dec. 31, 1972, Roberto Clemente lost his life in a plane crash as he was helping to deliver emergency supplies to Nicaragua earthquake victims. Clemente was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, the first Latin American in the Hall of Fame. The offered ticket stub measures 1.2x2.8". It is for a field box ticket costing $4.15. The stub has been encapsulated and PSA graded FR 1.5.
