Great content dating to 1951 relating to Dan Bankhead, who was the first Black pitcher in Major League history. Three-page letter is handwritten on 7.5x10.25" unlined Brooklyn Dodgers stationery with the return address from the team's spring training site in Vero Beach, Florida. In the letter, Bankhead expresses his love for his wife following an apparently-difficult stretch, noting, "As you know, I miss you and the kids very much. More so because we were not really as we should have been when I left. Believe me if you will, I love you very much more than you think." Pages have two mailing folds, comes in original envelope torn open at one side, postmarked Feb 24, 1951. Comes with Barney Stein original 8x10" team photo that we believe to be Type I (horizontal crease runs the entire length of the photo approximately one inch below top border, not affecting players). Lot comes with a folder of Bankhead-related items, including personal snapshots, multiple team photos, correspondence, news clippings, and more.
