Sandy Koufax at his best was a comet that blazed across the baseball sky for five brief seasons (1962-66) - years in which the Dodger left-hander dominated hitters as no pitcher had done before and which no pitcher has equaled since in any half decade span. Displayed is a Sandy Koufax game worn cap from the penultimate year of Koufax's career - 1965 - when the Hall of Famer won both the pitchers' Triple Crown and the Cy Young Award. Sandy played 12 years in the Major Leagues (1955-66), all with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the only player to have won three Cy Young Awards when there was only one issued, not one for each league. When Koufax finally gained command of his always-lightning fastball and added an outstanding curveball, he became phenomenal. Between 1962-66, Koufax won 111 games and lost only 34 times. During those five years, he won three Triple Crowns and his three Cy Young Awards. In 1965, when the offered cap was worn by Koufax, Sandy won the Triple Crown with a 26-8 record, with a 2.04 ERA and 382 strikeouts. He helped the Dodgers to win the '65 World Series as Los Angeles beat the Minnesota Twins in seven games. Koufax finished his career with a record of 165-87, with a 2.76 ERA. The displayed cap is from the collection of Louis Kendrick. He obtained items from the players and the teams. A collector during the early years, he never purchased anything; the cap was given to him because it was not considered valuable. Kendrick made place cards for all of his items that detailed the specifics. This hat comes with his original place card (measuring 2.1x3.1") that was stapled to the hat. The place card's typed writing reads, "1965 CAP/Los Angeles Dodgers/Sandy Koufax/This cap was worn by pitcher Sandy Koufax/Recived (sic) this cap from Nobe Kawano clubhouseman (sic) Aug. 17. 1965." The cap has a vintage, faded "32," handprinted in ink, under the brim. The leather band is brittle and has wear, with some pieces of the band either torn or broken off and missing. The cap has Tim McAuliffe and KM Pro markings, and it is a size 7 1/4. The "button" on the top of the cap has some small stains, but overall, the outside of the cap is beautiful and shows nice use. This is one of the very few authentic Koufax caps known to exist.
