Displayed is a 1971 Curt Motton Baltimore Orioles American League Championship ring. Motton was an outfielder and pinch hitter who played eight Major League seasons, with seven of those seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Motton was with Baltimore (1967-71 and 1973-74) and with both the Milwaukee Brewers and the California Angels in 1972. Motton's MLB career batting average was .213, but even though he was only 5'8" and 164 lbs., he had power and hit 25 lifetime home runs in 567 at bats. Motton's best season was 1969, with Baltimore, as he batted .303 and hit six home runs in only 125 at bats, with an outstanding OPS of .971. In 1971, the Orioles had a 101-57 record, and they finished in 1st place in the AL East. Motton batted .189, with four homers. The Orioles defeated Oakland by 3-0 in games to win the AL Championship Series but lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates by 4-3 in games in the World Series. After the World Series, the Orioles went on a tour of Japan. The left shank of the ring reads "Japanese Tour" and depicts an image of a Baltimore Oriole caricature astride Earth. The right shank reads "MOTTON" and "Three Straight" with the years "1969/1970/1971." Around the face of the ring is imprinted "1971/Baltimore Orioles/AL Champions."
