When it came to telling stories and reciting history about the St. Louis Cardinals, no one was better equipped than the late Red Schoendienst. During the course of his 19-year MLB career (1945 to ‘63), he played 15 seasons with the Cards. Of his 10 All-Star Game appearances, nine times he was elected as a member of the Cardinals. A steady second baseman, Schoendienst posted a career .983 fielding percentage and tied or topped the league in fielding seven times. His best season at the plate came in 1953 when he batted .342, second in the National League, with 15 home runs and 79 RBIs. He led the league with 200 hits in 1957. He finished his career with a .289 batting average, 2,449 hits, 427 doubles and 1,223 runs. He also set a Major League record with eight doubles in a three-game span. But as good a player as he was, he was an even better mentor. He managed St. Louis to two pennants (1967 and ‘68) and a World Series championship (‘67). In fact, Schoendienst ranks second in Cardinals history with 1,041 wins as a manager. His 12-year tenure as manager is the second longest in franchise history behind only Tony La Russa. The team retired his No. 2 jersey in 1996. A bronze statue portraying Schoendienst in the air at second base, kicking up dust while pivoting to complete a double play, is positioned right outside Busch Stadium. To no one’s surprise, his lengthy involvement with the team led him to become known as “Mr. Cardinal.” He was inducted into Cooperstown in 1989 after being voted in by the Veterans Committee. From one of his many seasons (1979 to ‘95) coaching with the team, comes this 1986 St. Louis Cardinals game worn coach's road jersey signed by Schoendienst with the classic chenille Cardinals two-bird logo above the embroidered red cursive "Cardinals" adorning the chest. The size 46 gray jersey includes the proper Rawlings manufacturer’s “Set 1 1986” tagging on the inside front tail. His unmistakable signature appears diagonally in blue Sharpie to the left of his uniform number “2” in red tackle twill outlined in blue, which measures 4.75” high. Underneath the autograph, which rates a 9/10, he added the inscription “HOF 89.” The back of the jersey shows uniform number “2” centered (8” tall) in red tackle twill outlined in blue just below his name “SCHOENDIENST” that stretches in a semi-circular fashion across the shoulders. The letters measure 3” tall and show some fraying on the edges. The jersey reflects good use and is accompanied by a pair of red, white and blue stirrups that were also worn by Red.
