Presented is a rare working press pass for the Atlanta Braves' home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 8, 1974, when Atlanta's Hank Aaron hit home run number 715, breaking Babe Ruth's all-time single-season record for homers. A sell-out crowd of 53,775 backed Aaron in his quest at Atlanta Stadium. Hank had hit home run number 714 in the Braves' season opener four days earlier. Aaron had received a great amount of hate mail in the past year, as racists insulted him and even threatened his life in anonymous letters. Hank's parents were at the game, and before the contest began, Aaron's mother, Mrs. Herbert Aaron, said of Hank, "He does what his momma tells him, and I told him to go out there and hit it. He's going to hit it tonight." Lefty Al Downing was the starter for the Dodgers. He walked Aaron in the bottom of the second inning. Dusty Baker doubled, and with the help of a Bill Buckner error in left field, Aaron scored to break Willie Mays' NL record for runs scored as Aaron scored his 2,063rd. Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Darrell Evans on first base, Aaron hit a 2-1 pitch off Downing into the Atlanta bullpen in left field for the record. The working press pass measures 2.75x4.6". It includes the Atlanta Braves' logo and reads, "1974/Atlanta Braves, Inc. Working Press Pass/subject to conditions on reverse side/FIELD, CAMERA BOXES & CLUB HOUSE/Admission good this date only 4/8 (the date is written by an unknown hand in black marker), 0139 Press Box working space 0139/Press Lounge meal and service 0139. The working press pass is in EXCELLENT condition, and it is a scarce collectible that commemorates Aaron's historic 715th home run.
